Mistresses of Metal’s Exclusive Interview With Sam “F.N.G” Perez of Helldorado

M.O.M: Hi, Sam! So, you haven’t really been in the spotlight much since joining the band, and you have a LOT of fans worldwide. Pretty much the only fans who know anything about you are the hometown fans. We’ll just give everyone else the chance to get to know you a little bit as well. How long have you been with Helldorado now?
Sam: If I’m not mistaken, I believe I started with Helldorado 9 or 10 months ago.
M.O.M: How did you find them, or vice versa?
Sam: Well, that’s kind of an interesting story. I was in another band called “Entanglement” at the time, and working for a local grocery distribution company. One of my stops happened to be where the vocalist, Dustin works. We would talk shop about our respective bands, and just kind of shoot the shit about music in general, and one day he told me that they had to let their guitarist go. We spoke about me trying out a few times, and after about a month of that, I went for it.
M.O.M: Sweet! They are such an AMAZING bunch of guys! What is it like being in a band with them?
Sam: They REALLY are! They have all been very gracious, and made me feel right at home from the start! Really awesome bunch of guys!
M.O.M: So, how long have you been playing guitar, and do you play anything else?
Sam: I’ve been playing guitar for about 18+ years now. But I started playing music in 3rd grade, with the cello. Then I learned the violin and viola. I picked up the stand up bass at the end of elementary school, and stuck with that for awhile, playing in jazz band, and the high school orchestra. I also learned the piano, with the help of my mother and a big ass Beethoven music book. Then I picked up a guitar, and played the hell out of that dirty bitch. Lol
M.O.M: Who are your influences? Is there anyone that REALLY inspires you?
Sam: We could probably go on for a few hundred pages on my influences, but there ARE a few who really stand out to me. when I was little, hearing my mother play Beethoven and Chopin spiked my interest. When I started playing guitar, I was a huge Smashing Pumpkins fan. And now my absolute favorite musician ( and in my opinion, one of the most talented musicians/composers) is Devin Townsend. But my taste in music is kind of all over the place. One minute, I’ll be listening to the heaviest black metal ever, and the next minute, it’ll be fracking Lady Gaga!
M.O.M: Wow! A wide range indeed! So, what’s been the coolest Helldorado experience you’ve had so far?
Sam: The very first show I played with the band stands out the most. We played The Knitting Factory here in Spokane, and it was PACKED! I think there were between 1400 and 1500 people there! At this point, I had never played for more than 100-150 people at once, so it was a shock seeing that many people waiting to see us play.
M.O.M: Have you gotten used to having such a huge global fan base? What does that feel like?
Sam: Honestly, I’m not sure if I’ll ever get used to it. it’s all still very surreal to me. But it does feel incredible to have so many AMAZING fans all over the place like we do.
M.O.M: Do you have a favorite Helldorado song?
Sam: I’d have to say “Brass Knuckle Priest” for sure. We have some new ones for the next album that I can’t get out of my head, either.
M.O.M: Are you doing any writing on the next album?
Sam: Yes, I am. Gabe and I have been hammering out quite a few riffs together!
M.O.M: We CAN’T WAIT to hear that!!! Before we go, is there anything you would like to say to your fans, or anything you would like them to know about you?
Sam: I really want to say thank you to all the fans out there! They are some of the most intense and kick-ass people you’ll ever meet! Without you amazing people, we wouldn’t be in the position we’re in now. A simple thank you doesn’t even come close to properly expressing the amount of gratitude I feel, but thank you all, nonetheless. You all kick some serious fucking ass!
M.O.M: Very cool! Thanks for hangin’ out with us tonight!
Sam: It was great talking to you as well! And thank you for taking the time to talk with my aging fat ass!!! You are absolutely awesome!!!
M.O.M: It was my pleasure! \m/
